在全球各地的文化中，自人類文明存在以來，就[一直有人](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender_history)的性別認同經驗與基於生殖器結構的盎格魯-歐洲概念的二元性別不一致。 4500年前，蘇美爾帝國的中性別祭司階級Gala存在。 北美洲的土著文化在歐洲殖民主義之前就認識到[第三性別](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_gender)，直到今天仍然如此。 非洲各地的部落[文化](https://medium.com/@janelane_62637/the-splendor-of-gender-non-conformity-in-africa-f894ff5706e1)認識到許多性別身份，[歐洲人試圖消滅](https://daily.jstor.org/the-deviant-african-genders-that-colonialism-condemned/)。 人類長期以來一直擁有與所謂的西方文化中今天的所謂「傳統」性別觀念不同的身份，規範和符合度。

身為跨性別者，可能意味著一個出生時擁有陰莖的人其實是女孩，一個出生時擁有陰戶的人其實是男孩，或是無論任何生殖器配置的人，都可能無法完全符合性別光譜的兩端，而是非二元性別。

|
||
一個跨性別者可以在生命中的 *任何時刻* 認識到這件事。有些小孩在他們能夠理解性別概念時就已經察覺到，有些則是等到青春期開始才開始感受到，還有些實際上沒有感到任何不對勁直到他們長大成人。許多人只是根本沒有接觸過他們的性別可能和出生時指定的性別不同的概念，也無法理解這種感覺，因此只是簡單地接受了自己的命運。

||
更普遍的是，即使有人對自己出生時被指定的性別感到不滿，他們也認為這與跨性別者的經驗不同。有些人可能認為，希望成為跨性別者並進行性別轉變是對那些「真正」知道自己其實是男孩或女孩「靈魂裝錯身體」的跨性別者的一種不尊重。大眾媒體傳播的跨性別經驗故事可能會創造出一個非常錯誤的印象，讓人誤解成為跨性別者意味著什麼，以及成長為跨性別者是什麼感覺。
